Note | [Source - Katy] Although thereafter mostly a farmer, Charles ran a hamburger stand for a time in town in Bartlett, Texas. He was said to make good hamburgers but he closed down the stand and moved from Bartlett to Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1916 upon the advice of his doctor who said Corpus would be better for Charles' asthma. However, Charles also moved his family a lot anyway, he was almost a gypsy since he always saw greener pastures elsewhere. His asthma was very bad, and his daughter Katy saw him nearly die 2 or 3 different times from it. When hit by a serious attack, he would be taken to the doctor for a shot of adrenalin. Charles moved his family from Corpus to Colorado City, Texas, around 1924. [Source - Juanita] Charles was with his granddaughters Juanita (5) and Carlene (3) the day he died. They went to get water together and bring it back to the house in buckets, with Charles bending over to carry a bucket together with little Carlene. When they were close to the house he fell down. He was brought into the house and he never regained consciousness. For a long time Juanita felt responsible for her grandfather's death. |
