Was very stingy, too stingy to ever marry. He would only by groceries for the day because he didn't want to have any food available to offer anyone else. His mother lived with him, but he didn't take good care of her. He wouldn't get electricity and used kerosene lamps without chimneys so that a lot of smoke was created. Inevitably, his mother would break things because of having to use the lamps at her age. The mother wound up in an insane asylum, probably put there because Tom didn't want to take care of her.
