Note | [Harold Grinstead Family.FTW] Credit for most of the data on the first six generations is given to Correl Shumaker and John L.N. Grinstead in their book titled "THE WILLIAM GRINSTEAD FAMILY IN AMERICA" dated April 1974. Our thanks go to them and the many other Grinsteads that gave them information on this family. William I Grinstead was born in England in 1634. He came to Northumberland County, Virginia in 1650 as an indentured servant of Col. John Mottrum.* Col. Mottrum gave 50 acres of Virginia land to pay for the passage of each indentured servent. At this time he had 25 men to come from England and William I Grinstead was one of them. They were to work as indentured servants for five or six years and would then be free to be on their own. At the same time Elizabeth Kaye (Key) was a maid-servant to this same family. * "EARLY VIRGINIA IMMIGRANTS 1623-1666" Greer - ref 975.3 gen, page 137 Grested, Wm 1650 by Col. John Mottrum, Northumberland Co. Va. Apparently William was not permitted to marry until he had served the full time with his benefactor, and so it was not until July 21, 1656 that he married Elizabeth, the daughter of Thomas Key (Kaye). Elizabeth bore William two sons, John and William II. The two brothers married sisters, the daughters of John Parse. In his will, John Parse left his 500 acres of land to the two sons-in-law, the part called "Hog Towne" to John, and the part called "Long Neck" to William II. Some of this John's descendants are said to have settled in some of the counties of northern Kentucky even before 1800, but we are more interested in the descendants of William Grinstead II. |
