| Note | Fred Barnfield's notes from attending Sylvia's funeral: The service and burial was at Brookside Cemetery where a number of Barnfields are buried, including Harry and Mozella and Uncle Lee (Sylvia's grave is just a few feet from her father's). Timmy Rich and Harry Barnfield spoke very movingly. Timmy was the first speaker and I hadn't seen him since he was a teenager. He's prematurely gray and I didn't recognize him when he first stood up there, but as soon as he started talking I recognized his voice and mannerisms from umpteen years ago and thought "That's Timmy - where's his roller skates?" (He wore roller skates constantly when he was a kid.) The pews were all full so I guess there was roughly 100 - 150 people there, maybe more. The younger two of Harry's adopted sons sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Amazing Grace" absolutely beautifully in harmony and with no accompaniment. The casket was porcelain white with some delicate floral designs at the corners and a soft pink interior. Everyone agreed that they had done a wonderful job with Sylvia and that she looked really good in a nice outfit with beautiful nails and other details. Everyone was invited to BJ's after the burial where there was a ton of good food and a running slide show of old pictures of Sylvia and family on a computer monitor. Of her generation, Bruce, Harry, Larry, and Tootsie attended. Zelma and her daughter Sue Bynum, and JW & Evelyn were there from the Alice's side (they all looked really good, even though Zelma uses a walker). Linda Robinson (nee Barnfield) and Jimmy & Joyce Barnfield were also there (Linda and Jimmy being double cousins to Lee's kids). I went with my parents, Aunt Juanita, Aunt Margaret, and my next oldest brother Byron. Presley was looking very dapper and did very well during the whole thing. Of course there where countless other people there that are descendants of the ones I've mentioned or part of Sylvia and Presley's extended immediate family. |
