Note | Note from Nolan Irvin (grandson to Cornie Irvin) that accompanied this photo: "You thought Grannie was cute in a suit. Check out the man less wedding. Fred, these folks were cut ups and my grandmother was fun to be around. She once said she never had grandparents so she wanted to be to her grand kids what she thought a grandparent ought to be. We thought the world of her. Grand Daddy, however, was a different thing. Us younger cousins were scared to death of him. There was the time at an advanced age some of the kids pulled up to Grannies house to find her up in one of the pecan trees "thrashing" pecans. The kids were not pleased. My earliest memory of racial prejudice however came from something she did and said. I was at her house in Barlett. A black boy about my age (preteen) knocked on her front door. I went and told her, "Grannie there is a black boy knocking at the front door." She said, "Let him knock, he knows better than to come to my front door like he was white!" It was not so much what she said but how she said it. It made me angry and I still remember it." |
